Problem

Preparing for life and certification in Cyprus involves several related but distinct learning needs. A learner may need structured Greek vocabulary practice, realistic preparation for the official A2 Greek certificate, and knowledge of contemporary Cyprus. Generic flashcard apps and chatbots treat these as separate problems, provide little continuity between sessions, and rarely combine listening, reading, writing, and assessment in one place.

The goal was to turn those requirements into one authenticated product that could support everyday practice, exam preparation, saved progress, and content administration without making the experience feel like a collection of disconnected tools.

Action

  • Built a responsive React 19, TypeScript, Vite, and Tailwind CSS frontend around three clear learning tracks: Greek vocabulary, A2 exam preparation, and contemporary Cyprus knowledge.
  • Created CEFR-organized vocabulary practice with selectable levels, Greek-to-English and English-to-Greek modes, multiple-choice quizzes, listening and dictation exercises, and reusable flashcards.
  • Built an AI tutor for A2 certificate preparation across reading, listening, and writing. It generates structured practice tasks, evaluates written Greek against CEFR expectations, explains corrections, and supplies an A2-level model response.
  • Added speech synthesis for pronunciation and listening tasks, with provider fallback handling across Google Cloud TTS, Gemini, and OpenAI so a temporary provider failure does not have to stop a learning session.
  • Implemented a 25-question Cyprus knowledge quiz using material aligned with the official syllabus, alongside an optional AI-generated mode. Attempts, selected questions, answers, and scores are persisted for reliable result review.
  • Added Google OAuth and email magic-link authentication, protected learner routes, profile history, and an administrator workspace for filtering, editing, importing, and exporting vocabulary content.
  • Built the API with Node.js and Express, using SQLite for vocabulary, users, sessions, attempts, results, and generated content. AI calls use structured JSON flows with Gemini as the primary provider and OpenAI fallback handling.
  • Containerized and deployed the application behind Nginx on the shared production Docker infrastructure, keeping the Greek Quiz service independently buildable and deployable from the other applications on the server.

Result

A live learning platform that takes users from focused vocabulary drills to complete A2 reading, listening, and writing practice, while also covering the Cyprus knowledge material relevant to long-term residents and citizenship candidates. The product combines deterministic curriculum content with AI where generation and personalized feedback add value, while authentication, progress history, administration, provider fallbacks, and production deployment make it an operational application rather than a demonstration.
